Maintenance
Care & Maintenance of Your Leather Bag / Accessory:
A leather bag is an investment in style and deserves proper care and attention. Our bags are ready to use right out of the box and have already been treated to repel moisture and dirt. In most cases, therefore, additional care products are not necessary.
In fact, we generally advise against using leather care products. Many leather care products contain chemicals that can dry out the leather, cause discoloration, or damage the protective layer. This can also cause the metal hardware to oxidize or become damaged more quickly. Regular and careful use is often the best way to care for your leather goods.
Leather is, of course, a natural product that reacts to external factors. By following a few simple habits, you can keep your bag looking great for years to come.
1. Cleaning & Refreshing
To prevent dirt build-up:
- Use a soft, dry brush to gently remove visible dirt.
- Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth (not wet) to remove dust and light dirt.
- Do not use any cleaning or maintenance products, as they may damage the leather and its finish.
2. Extra care in case of rain or accidents
Did your bag get wet anyway? No worries:
- First, remove any dirt with a dry brush.
- Gently blot the surface dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Fill the bag with paper to keep its shape.
- Let the bag dry naturally in a well-ventilated area, but never on a heater or in direct sunlight.
3. Things You Should Avoid
To keep your bag in top condition, there are some things it's best to avoid:
- Sun, Heat, & Rain – Prolonged exposure can cause the leather to dry out, warp, or discolor. The trim edges can also become too hot, and in the worst case, they may soften or bleed color.
- Chemicals – Perfume, sunscreen, makeup, hand sanitizer, and cleaning products can damage the leather and hardware or cause permanent stains.
- Metal & Moisture – Avoid exposing clasps or chains to water or perfume to prevent oxidation.
- Overpacking – This can cause the bag to lose its shape and put excessive strain on the handles or seams.
- New dark denim – May transfer color onto light-colored bags, and the stains are often difficult to remove.
- Friction with rough surfaces – Leather is susceptible to abrasion and damage.
- Dark Clothing on Light-Colored Bags – Be careful of color transfer, especially with new or unwashed fabrics.
- Sharp objects or nails – It’s best to open your bag with your fingers to avoid scratches.
- Pets – Keep your bag away from curious pets and scratching cats.
4. Zipper Maintenance
- Keep the zipper clean by gently removing dust and dirt regularly with a soft, dry brush.
- Open and close the zipper gently. Never force a stiff zipper; this can cause damage.
- Is the zipper stiff or does it not close properly? If so, please contact our customer service. It's best not to use lubricants or oils, as these can cause stains on the leather.
5. Storage
If you don't use your bag for a while:
- Store it in the dust bag provided.
- Fill the bag with tissue paper or soft cloths to keep its shape.
- Store the bag in a dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
