Maintenance
Packaging of your bag upon delivery:
When you receive your bag, it's usually neatly wrapped in paper. We do this on purpose - this way, the bag stays in good shape and is well-protected during storage.
During quieter periods, we often remove the protective paper for you, but during peak periods (like during a SALE), that's not always possible. No problem: you can easily remove the protective paper.
Then let your bag breathe for a bit - the leather will naturally return to its perfect shape. Think of it as a mini beauty sleeper for your bag!
Care & Maintenance of your leather bag
A leather bag is an investment in style and deserves the right care and attention. Our bags are already treated against moisture and dirt, so you can use them right away. However, leather remains a natural product that reacts to external influences. With a few simple habits, you can ensure your bag stays beautiful and supple for years to come.
1. Cleaning & Freshening
To prevent dirt build-up:
- Use a soft, dry brush to gently remove visible dirt.
- Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth (not wet!) to remove dust and invisible dirt.
- Avoid chemical cleaning agents as these may damage the leather.
2. Protection against external influences
Leather stays beautiful when you protect it regularly:
- Treat your bag with a PFAS/PFOS-free leather protection spray that is suitable for leather.
- Allow the bag to dry completely before using or storing it again.
- Our favorite: Collonil 1909 (link to website).
For extra care:
- Apply a colorless leather cream or conditioner once a season.
- Particularly suitable for smooth, grained, metallic or printed leather.
- Avoid colored creams as they can cause stains.
3. Extra care in case of rain or accidents
Did your bag get wet? Don't worry:
- First remove dirt with a dry brush.
- Immediately pat the surface dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Fill the bag with paper to maintain its shape.
- Let the bag dry in a warm, well-ventilated place, but never on a radiator or in direct sunlight.
After drying, you can repeat the above steps (cleaning and protection).
4. What you should avoid
To keep your bag in top condition, there are some things you should avoid:
- Sun, heat & rain - Prolonged exposure can dry out, warp, or discolor the leather. It can also cause the edges to become too hot and, in the worst case, melt and release color.
- Chemicals - Perfume, sunscreen, makeup, hand gel, or pens can cause permanent stains.
- Metal & Moisture - Avoid contact between buckles or chains and water or perfume to prevent oxidation.
- Overfilling - This can cause the bag to become out of shape and overwork handles or seams.
- New dark denim - This can leave a stain on light-colored bags and is difficult to remove.
- Friction with rough surfaces - Leather is susceptible to abrasion and damage.
- Dark clothing on light bags - Beware of color transfer, especially with new or unwashed fabrics.
- Sharp objects or nails - It is best to open your bag with your fingers to avoid scratches.
- Pets - Keep your bag away from curious pets and scratching cats.
5. Zipper maintenance
- Clean zippers regularly with a dry cloth to remove dust.
- Is the zipper feeling stiff? Apply a small amount of zipper lubricant or rub the zipper teeth with a pencil tip (graphite) to keep the zipper running smoothly.
Caution: Never force a stiff zipper as this may cause damage.
6. Storage
If you don't use your bag for a while:
- Store these in the dust bag provided.
- Fill the bag with tissue paper or soft cloths to maintain its shape.
- Store the bag in a dry, dark place - not in the sun or near a heater.
